“Kent City Community Schools:

Where Every Student is an Honor Student, They Just Have to Earn It.”

This quote made by Kent City Middle School Principal, Greg Apkarian sums up the new embedded honors program being implemented in the Kent City Community School District.  Teachers have developed project based, career relevant, and curriculum focused anchor activities that when properly completed, can credential students as honors students.

Embedded Honors Credentialing is part of Kent City Community Schools 2009-2010 K-12 High Impact Initiatives.  Embedded Honors provide avenues for teachers to give opportunities to gifted and talented students through differentiated instruction rather than creating whole classrooms designated to only serving honor students.  This initiative will service the individual needs of each student by providing those who are excelling with challenging additions to the curriculum while at the same time opening up more time for teachers to focus on and address those who are having trouble grasping certain concepts.

Bridging Kent City Schools to the Surrounding Community Through Art

Kent City Community Schools is finding unique ways to expose their students to more art by bringing in local artists from the community and exposing students to art that surrounds us in the community to take advantage of the growing West Michigan art scene.

On August 26th, Kent City Community Schools took 64 elementary students on buses down to Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park for a day full of art.  Students were able to take an indoor tour guided by an art docent, create their own sculpture out of metal parts, and take an “I Spy” tour of the Outdoor Sculpture Park on a Kids-Tram.
