Attendance

Every day in school is an opportunity for learning and every minute counts. That's why Kent City Elementary is participating in the Strive for Less Than 5 Days Absent attendance initiative. Our goal is for every student to try to miss less than 5 days this year, arrive on time and stay all day. In addition, we challenge every classroom to achieve an average daily attendance goal of 95% or higher each week.

Why? Because the more time students are in school, the better they do!

  • Students who miss less than 10% of days – 2 per month – are more likely to have higher grades than others
  • Students who miss less than 10% are also less likely to drop out
  • Future earning potential of graduates is double that of students who drop out

Any school time missed is learning time missed and that time can add up quickly. Even missing part of a day can impact learning. Being late or leaving early for an appointment can set students behind making it hard to catch up. That means an absence is an absence from learning whether it’s “excused” or “unexcused.”

Here are 5 tips to help maximize your student’s learning time

1. Prepare for school the night before to save time in the morning
2. Create regular bedtime and morning routines to make sure your student gets 8-10 hours of sleep so they can get up and get to school on time
3. Plan vacations during school breaks
4. Make doctor and other appointments for before or after school whenever possible
5. Have backup transportation in case your student’s usual method falls through

Help your student achieve their best and Strive for Less Than 5 absences this year!
